[Read the report](https://www.weforum.org/publications/turning-the-tide-a-financier-s-guide-to-investing-in-blue-carbon-ecosystems/) ## Blue carbon supports people, nature, and climate There is an urgent need for concerted, comprehensive climate action that leverages the power of the global economy whilst serving to benefit local communities.Mangroves, seagrasses and salt marshes can store up to five times more carbon per acre than tropical rainforests, and large-scale protection and restoration of theses ecosystems could remove around 3% of annual greenhouse gas emissions.Yet, carbon storage is just one of many benefits that these ecosystems provide. They supply coastal communities with livelihoods and income, provide robust defenses against floods and storms, and boost biodiversity. These benefits make these ecosystems highly valuable in both intrinsic and economic terms. It’s essential we recognise this value. ### Apply to the BCAP grant programme BCAP is issuing grants to provide targeted, early-stage capital to projects and enterprises that align with national blue carbon priorities and are looking to advance from pilots to scale. The grants are designed to support feasibility work, organisational strengthening, and early implementation activities that improve bankability, catalyse follow-on investment, and deliver measurable benefits for coastal ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. In parallel, high-quality blue carbon projects are being recognised for their stackable benefits, offering social and environmental investment in the form of nature-positive, sustainable fisheries and infrastructure that all lead to blue carbon ecosystem conservation and restoration. ## What is the Blue Carbon Action Partnership (BCAP)? BCAP is designed to connect people and organizations from a wide range of backgrounds. We are address the barriers that are holding back high-quality blue carbon projects. This involves catalyzing important conversations on policy, finance, and standards, convening partners from across an array of sectors both in individual countries and globally, and collaboratively driving meaningful change to conserve and restore blue carbon ecosystems. ### Governments BCAP works with governments to establish National BCAPs that support country-driven and country-level collaborations to develop and implement relevant science, policy and financial mechanisms. ### Businesses and Finance institutions For any organization or actor not yet involved in blue carbon but interested, BCAP can help build understanding of the blue carbon space and foster connections with others for effective collaboration. ### Local Communities and Civil Society For any organization or actor already involved in blue carbon, BCAP can collaborate to increase capacity, create and support resources, and build connections to coordinate global action. ## Related initiatives [View More](#) ### Friends of Ocean Action Friends of Ocean Action is a group of ocean leaders, convened by the Ocean Action Agenda at the World Economic Forum. The COAST programme forms part of the UK’s £500 million Blue Planet Fund, which aims to protect and enhance the marine environment and reduce poverty. The Blue Planet Fund is led by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the UK Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs.
